How to Make Metal in Suno AI That Doesn't Sound Plastic

If your Suno metal tracks come out flat, weak, or obviously "AI", the problem is almost always the prompt. Suno is very sensitive to wording. This is the complete, no-fluff guide to writing metal prompts that actually hit — deathcore, metalcore, djent, groove, thrash, death and black metal.

1. Keep the Style field tight (aim for 600 characters, not 1000)

The Suno "Style of Music" field accepts up to 1000 characters, but the sweet spot is 5–8 blocks of description, around 600. Past that the last tags get deprioritized and details like tempo slip. Lead with the most important info — Suno weighs the beginning of the field most heavily:

• Genre first (1–2 max): deathcore, djent, groove metal
• Tempo as a number, early: 180 BPM — a figure, not a vague word like "fast tempo" that Suno has to guess at.
• Then drums, vocals, guitar tone, mood — comma-separated, never full sentences.

2. The winning tag order

[Sub-genre / time signatures] ; [Textures & instruments] ; [Vocal style] ; [Mix & tonality]

Drop the empty words. epic, brutal, heavy, intense, aggressive describe no actual sound — Suno averages them into a bland commercial mix. Write fast blast beats, dissonant minor chugs, raw distorted shout instead.

Example: deathcore, 180 BPM; chugging riffs, phrygian breakdowns, blast beats; guttural growls; Drop A, A minor, modern polished mix.

Pick the tuning your sub-genre actually uses — Drop A or Drop B for deathcore, Drop C for metalcore, C standard for doom, E standard for thrash. A tuning tag that fights the genre is one of the fastest ways to get a generic result.

3. Use structure tags in the Lyrics box

Section tags like [Verse], [Chorus], [Breakdown] go at the top of the Lyrics field, not the Style field. Use a colon inside the brackets — [Intro: down-tuned crushing riff], never a comma, or Suno sings the instruction out loud. Never put a section after [Outro], and close on [End]. Suno reads them as instructions, and verse/chorus are the most reliably respected. A [Breakdown, half-time feel] tag gives you a near-guaranteed rhythm change.

4. Kill the "plastic AI" sound (organic tags)

To make Suno metal sound human, add organic tags and avoid "polished" ones:

• Add: raw performance, live room sound, natural pick attack, amp hum, analog distortion
• Avoid: studio quality, perfect, polished mix, quantized — these signal "robotic".

5. Exclude what you don't want

Use the dedicated Exclude Styles field rather than stuffing negatives into the Style field: pop, clean vocals, piano. Keep it to a handful — vague negatives underperform, and a positive replacement ("very loud drums and guitars, aggressive mix") does more work than a long list of things to avoid.

• Style Influence: 65–85% — high, so Suno holds the genre lane. Lower it only if your description is being followed too rigidly.
• Weirdness: 25–40 safe, 45–55 neutral, 60–75 adventurous — lower it when the hook needs stability, raise it when results feel generic.
• Variety: 0 for maximum consistency between the two versions v6 generates; raise it to explore a fusion.
• Audio Influence: 55–75% — when you upload a reference (like a riff WAV), higher sticks closer to it.
• Max Mode: ON for long, multi-section songs.
